Third Grade Newsletter

August 26 - 30



Math - We are starting to learn multiplication facts.  We will start with the 2’s.  I will send sheets home for practice.  We are also learning about the commutative property.

Example:  4 x 3 = 3 x 4  The factors can change places and the total (product) will stay the same.  On math topic tests and end of module tests there will be 2 scores.  The one that is higher will be put into the computer.


ELA - Students will begin reading The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. We will practice discussing the meaning of key illustrations throughout the story. We will identify the central message of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore through a guided class discussion. Spelling Test will be on Thursday, August 29.


Spelling Words-  habit, wonder, wonderful, flying, flutter, chatter, fellow, nested

Homework- Monday- Write Spelling words 5 times each; Tuesday- Write Spelling Words habit, wonder, wonderful, and flying in a sentence; Wednesday- Write Spelling Words flutter, chatter, fellow, and nested in a sentence; This should all be done on 1 sheet of paper to be turned on Thursday, August 29.


Science – This week in science we are continuing with weather. We will be learning how to read a thermometer, and we will be graphing weather over a period of time. There will be a quiz Friday where the students will have to look at a thermometer and determine the temperature. There is no homework this week.


Social Studies - This week in social studies we are continuing map skills, but this week the students will need to remember their cardinal and intermediate directions because we will be working with map grids. We will focus on this all week. The students will have a small quiz Friday on reading a map grid. There will be no homework this week.




  • No school on Monday, September 2nd
  • Concessions will be available this week.  Prices are 25 ¢, 50 ¢, 75 ¢.
  •  Fashion Friday will begin after Labor Day. A note will be sent home with your child if they are able to participate on Fashion Friday.  If your child does not get a note, he or she does NOT have Fashion Friday.
  • Graded papers will come home on Thursdays.  Please go over these with your child.  If you have any questions, please write a note and put in the folder with the papers. They get a positive DOJO for bringing the folder and papers back signed! 
  • St. Jude Tuesday will start on September 10th.  Students may pay $2 to wear regular clothes. $1 for the top and $1 for the pants.
  • Please put your child’s snack in a ziploc bag and label with their name.  This will keep it from spilling out in the basket if they don’t finish.
