Third Grade Newsletter

November 26 - 30

 

Reading - Please read Dibels passage each night and return on Friday. This is  worth 4 points!! This week we are continuing- Cajun Folktales.

 

Spelling- Study words each night! Spelling Test Friday.


 

Math - We will finish up Module 2 with a test tomorrow.  A study guide worth 15 points is coming home today.  Please return tomorrow. Module 3 begins Wednesday and our topics are multiplying and dividing with units 6, 7, 8 and 9. .

 

Science - We are going to be discussing fossils and how our Earth has changed.

 

Social Studies:  Unit 1: The Place Called Louisiana. Defining culture.  Vocabulary words came home today. Test will be Friday!!!   Please Study!

 

Important Notes:

 

Today, students who met the ELA goal on the  Interim test were rewarded with getting to eat lunch this week with their favorite staff member, free concession, and getting to wear regular clothes this Wednesday.  Students who met the goal will bring home a certificate so you will know. If your child didn’t meet the goal, they will have another chance on the math interim test.

 

December 3rd - 7th is  PTO Santa Shop.

 

December 12 - 13 the 3rd graders will be taking the Interim Math test.  Please be sure that your child understands how to do the homework that is sent home.  Students who do well on the test will be rewarded!

 

On December 14th, we will be going to the Spring Theater to watch a movie.

 

Our Christmas Program will be December the 18th at 6:00.

 

December 19th is our last day for 2018!

Third Grade Newsletter

Sept. 17-21

 

Reading - Please read Dibels passage each night and return on Friday. This is  worth 4 points!! This week we will work on character traits and motivations of all three characters in Julian Tells.  Parents please encourage your child to read their library books for at least 20 minutes each day!

 

Spelling- Study words each night! Spelling Test Friday.


 

Math - We are going to be breaking arrays apart to learn about the distributive property.  This week's homework will be from the workbook. On Monday lesson 16, Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19,  I will send answers on REMIND.

 

Science - We will be continuing to investigate magnets.

 

Social Studies: We are still on Unit 1: The Place Called Louisiana


 

Important Notes

  • Graded papers will come home each Thursday, if possible.  Please sign both sets of papers. Mrs. Newsom will keep social studies and all ELA papers.  Mrs. Smith will keep all math and science papers.

  • Please sign and return the permission slip AND send the money for the field trip to Shongaloo to see Jack and the Beanstalk.

Sept. 10 - 14

 

Reading - Please read Dibels passage each night and return on Friday. This is  worth 4 points!! This week we will begin our book study of Julian Tells.  Throughout this book study we will focus on the Central Message that is conveyed through the characters actions.

 

Spelling- Study words each night! Spelling Test Friday.


 

Math - We are going to be dividing by units of 4 this week.  We will be looking at the meaning of the quotient ( the answer to a division problem).  Does the quotient tell us the size of the group or the number of groups. If you would like to look at the workbook pages we do and/or the teacher manual, you can GOOGLE - Engage New York math third grade.  This week we will be doing Module 1 lessons 13,14, 15, and 16). You can also have your child get on ZEARN, which is a math program that mirrors our lessons. ZEARN is a fantastic tool, especially for students who are struggling.  Please message me on remind if your child doesn’t know their username. Everyone’s password is smith. Please complete all homework each night. I am keeping up with who has their homework every night with a sticker chart. I will be giving out prizes to those who have it everyday for at least 5 out of 7 weeks.  


 

Science - We will finish up forces and will start on magnets.

Third Grade Newsletter

August 27-31

 

Reading - Please complete and return Dibels passage FRIDAY!!! (4PTS) This week we will be working on determining the Central Message.

 

Spelling - Spelling Test Friday! Please study words at home!

 

Math - Homework will look different from now on.  The majority of the problems on the homework will come from the LEAP practice test.  Please send to school each day. We will check daily. We are learning about the commutative property of multiplication.  4 x 2 = 2 x4. You can swap the numbers around and still get the same product (answer). We will also be working on our 2 facts and learning that multiplication and division are related.

 

Science - This week we will get to do our balloon rocket investigation to see the effects of force on an object. We are also learning about friction which is part of our force and motion unit. Grades in science come mostly from the activities that we do in class.

 

Important Information

 

We will be out of school on Monday, September 3rd.

 

Back to School NIght will be on Thursday September 6th. At 6:00 p.m.

 

Please send your child a jacket everyday.

Third Grade Newsletter

August 13 - 17

 

This week we will be teaching the class rules and procedures. Please make sure that you stress to your child the importance of following school rules and procedures.  In third grade, we do a lot of group work. Therefore, we will have lessons on how to work in a group, taking turns, and the importance of being kind and respectful to everyone. There is a no tolerance policy at NWUE for bullying.

 

Your third grader will  be taking several diagnostic tests this week.  There is a diagnostic test for ELA (English Language Arts) and a diagnostic test for math. These tests cover skills that were taught  in second grade. Each test has 3 sections, and we plan to administer one section per day.starting Tuesday, Please do not stress over these tests or stress your child out!  We will not give grades for these tests. These diagnostic tests help teachers determine which skills need to be taught.

 

Reading - Paper Based ELA Diagnostic Assessment, Project Read Phonology Diagnostic Assessment.

 

Spelling - Study words at home each night.  Spelling Test on Friday!

 

Math - We will begin our first lesson on Friday.  The 1st module in third grade is multiplying and dividing friendly numbers.  Don’t forget to complete and return daily homework.

 

Science - We will begin our “Forces and Motion” unit this week.

 

Social Studies - We will begin Unit 1: What makes Louisiana Unique?

Please be sure and send a jacket everyday because sometimes the classroom is chilly.  Also, please be sure and send a snack or two everyday in case your child doesn’t eat the lunch we have that day.
