Third Grade Newsletter

October 16 - 20

 

Reading - We are learning about how to write a narrative (aka a story).  We will be learning about transition words such as, first, next and last.  We are reading some more stories about Julian from a book called More Stories  Julian Tells.

 

Spelling - Our words begin with the blends spl, thr, squ, str.  Write the words that your child doesn’t know 3 times each.

 

Math - We are learning about how to tell time and solve word problems involving time.

 

Social Studies -  We are still learning about culture and what contributed to Louisiana’s unique culture.

 

Every Monday, we will wear a blue shirt to show support of ANTI-Bullying.

 

This Wednesday is PINK OUT DAY to support Breast Cancer Awareness.   Your child may wear a pink shirt and/or pants, socks, shoes, hats, etc.

 

Report cards will come home on the 19th.


 

This Friday is our Fall Carnival. It will start at 1:30.  Please send money with your child so they may purchase tickets for the carnival activities.  Parents and other family members are welcome to attend.


 

We have special visitors this week at our school.  They are from the Central Office and are observing how we do things at NWUE.  You will be given a questionnaire.  Please fill this out to help us know what you think we are doing well, and  how we can improve at NWUE.   We value and appreciate your input.


 

Wednesday, October 25th is 50’s day.  Your child may dress in 50’s style clothing to celebrate the 50th day of school!

 

Report cards will come home on the 19th.

Third Grade Newsletter

October 2-6

 

Reading – This week we will discuss the function of adjectives and their effect on the story, and identify how parts of the chapter “Our Garden” connect to and build off of sections from “Catalog Cats."  Students will learn what an opinion statement is and begin gathering reasons to support an opinion statement.  Students will begin to track Julian’s contributions to events across chapters of the text "The Stories Julian Tells." They prepare to write an opinion essay formulating an opinion statement about how Julian has changed across the chapters.

Spelling -  Practice words that you don’t know 3 times each night.

 

Math – We are continuing to learn about the distributive property, tape diagrams for solving division problems and multiplication facts for 2, 3 and 4.

Social Studies – This week we will start learning about Louisiana’s culture. We take grades on classwork that we do throughout the week.

September 25 – 29

 

Readimg -  We are continuing to read from our novel, The Stories Julian Tells.  We are learning about how to identify a central message and how to write an opinion essay.  Please continue to practice reading the passages that we send home.

Spelling – Test on Friday.

Math – We are working with multiplication and division with units of 3 and 4.  Please be sure that you are practicing these facts at home.

Science – We are learning about gravity this week.  Please study the vocabulary words for a test on Friday.

Pictures will be on the Wednesday the 27th.  All students will wear a uniform.

Fall Break is October 9 and 10th.

Gravity – the force that pulls objects towards each other.

Balanced forces – when the force is the same and the object doesn’t move.

Unbalanced forces – when one force is greater than the other,  so the object moves.

September 5 – 8

 

Reading  -  This week we are identifying the central message in our reading.  We will also be working on writing about the central message and giving details from the text that support the central message.  Please continue to have your child read the passage that we send home at the beginning of each week.

Spelling -  our test will be on Friday.  Your child needs to practice writing the words they don’t know 3 – 5 times each.

­Math  - We are going to begin multiplication with 2’s and 3’s.  We will also be learning the commutative property.  You may go to www.multiplication.com and your child can practice their facts while playing fun games.  Please have your child practice these facts so they can master them.  We will make a BIG DEAL out of learning the facts!  We will have a bulletin board out in the hall so we can display the names of those students who know their facts!  Every child loves to see their name on display for doing something good!

Third Grade Newsletter

August 28 – September 1

 

Reading – We are going to be reading “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” and using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.  We will be learning how illustrations can affect meaning and how to determine the central message of a story.  Accelerated Reader (AR) has started so encourage your child to READ, READ, READ!  Reading homework is due Friday and is worth 5 points.

 

Math – We are starting to learn about division – what it means to divide into groups.  We will not be learning division facts at this time.  We will be starting on our 2 facts this week.   Please practice at home.  Don’t forget to turn in homework on Friday.  It is worth 5 points.

 

Spelling – Please have your child study the words.  The words this week are words that end in  - ed, -ing, -er, -est.  Test on Friday.

 

Social Studies - We are continuing to learn about maps and how to locate places within Louisiana.

 

Fashion Friday starts this Friday.  YOUR CHILD MUST EARN IT!  If your child doesn’t come home with a Fashion Friday note, then your child must wear a uniform to school.

St. Jude Tuesday starts this Tuesday.  Your child must pay $1 for non-uniform top and $1 for non-uniform bottom.  Shorts must be school appropriate length.  No spaghetti straps for girls.

Third Grade Newsletter

August 21-25

 

 

Reading – This week we will be reviewing 2nd grade skills and having your child read to us.  Your child will have a reading passage to read each night and questions on the back. Your child will start reading at the beginning of the passage each night and you will time them for 1 minute.   Please be sure and write your initials and minutes read at the bottom.  Parents have to initial each night and record the number of words read in order for the student to receive full credit.  This should be returned on Friday for 5 points in Reading.  Your child will receive a  ZERO if not returned and this will cause your child’s grade to drop. 

Spelling – We will have a test on Friday on the words that are listed on this newsletter.  If you feel that your child needs to practice writing the words 3 times each that is up to you.  We do not require that the words be written, only that your child knows how to spell them on Friday.

Math – We are learning what multiplication means.  We will be making equal groups of objects, writing multiplication and repeated addition sentences.  Please have your child complete the math homework sheet and return on Friday.  If your child has trouble with the homework, please make a note on the homework so that the teacher will know and can help your child.  Homework in math is also worth 5 points. 

Social Studies – We are continuing our work with map skills and each student should be able to name their city, state, country, continent, and planet by Friday. 

Important Information:

SOLAR ECLIPSE – We will not be going outside to view the eclipse.

Dibels testing on Wednesday.

Concession prices are:

50 cents for a juice                         

small bags of chips are 50 cents and large bags 75 cents for a bag of chips

 

If you do not want to send money, please send a snack for the afternoon.  Children don’t always like what is in the cafeteria for lunch and are usually very hungry in the afternoon.

Send a jacket for your child.  The teachers move around a lot and tend to be hot natured!

This week we are learning rules, routines, and procedures.  Please look in your child’s folder for information specific to your child’s class.  This newsletter will come home every Monday, OR the first day of the school week.
